This paper gives an overview of the basic database services used in Bildschirmtext (Btx), the German interactive videotex system. Btx is operated by the German PTT since June 1984. It is available to everyone who owns a Btx terminal (a normal TV set with a built-in decoder or a PC-based workstation) and has subscribed to the service for a small monthly rate. The service is accessed through a local telephone call.
Besides giving the users access to its large public information database, it serves as a gateway to more than hundred external computers with their private databases.
